Both keep your panels from overcharging the battery. Only one of them actually gets full value out of your panels. Here’s the difference, in numbers. Small, single-panel trickle-charge systems (under ~150W) where the panel’s rated voltage is already close to the battery’s — a PWM controller is cheaper and the efficiency loss barely matters at that scale. Once you’re wiring panels in series to reach a higher voltage, or running any system over roughly 200–300W, MPPT is the one worth paying for.
