Fridge / propane basics (safety-first)

A warm fridge or an LP appliance that won’t stay lit is usually supply, mode select, level, 12V control, or ventilation — not a reason to defeat safety gear. Know whether you have an absorption fridge or a residential compressor fridge before you chase the wrong path. Prefer Text when smell, soot, or ammonia enters the picture.

Safety first: If you smell gas, hear a hiss you can’t locate, or suspect a leak — shut off LP at the tank, ventilate, no sparks/flames/cigarettes, Prefer Text or emergency services as appropriate. Do not “sniff test” with a flame. Never bypass LP safety devices (gas valves, thermocouples, ESO / flame-sense).

Symptoms

  • Absorption fridge warm on LP, electric, or both
  • Fridge clicks / tries to light; sparker ticks with no flame
  • Fridge cools on electric but not LP (or the reverse)
  • Tank shows gas but appliances won’t stay lit / won’t light
  • Yellow sooting flame, scorched cabinet, or heat damage behind the fridge
  • Error codes on a residential 12V / inverter-fed compressor fridge (different animal)
  • Related LP symptoms on furnace or water heater (cross-check supply — don’t duplicate a full furnace essay here)
  • 12V control fuse blown; display dark; board dead
  • Coach not level; absorption performance collapses on a slope

Quick checks (owner-safe)

  1. Smell check first. Any LP odor → tank OFF, ventilate, no flames, Prefer Text / emergency as needed. Stop this list.
  2. Confirm LP tank valve is open. If safe and outdoors-aware, a brief stove-burner check can confirm supply — then shut off if you’re diagnosing leaks. Do not leave unattended burners on as a “test.”
  3. Fridge mode select: LP vs electric vs auto. On electric, verify shore or inverter power is actually present.
  4. Level the coach — absorption fridges need level within OEM limits. A slope that feels fine for sleeping can still kill cooling.
  5. Confirm 12V control power at the fridge (blown control fuse is common). Panel lights / board dead → fuse and wiring before LP parts.
  6. Clean/inspect only what OEM allows without deep disassembly. Don’t bend thermocouples or “adjust” valves casually.
  7. Residential compressor units: verify 12V or inverter supply, vent clearances, and error-code meaning per OEM — do not apply absorption LP lighting steps to a compressor fridge.

When to stop DIY

  • Any LP smell or suspected leak
  • Yellow sooting flames, scorched cabinet wood, or melted plastic behind the fridge
  • Bypass of gas valves, thermocouples, flame sensors, or ESO devices — never
  • Ammonia / chemical refrigerant odor from an absorption cooling unit (cooling unit failure — not a DIY recharge)
  • Roof vent / chimney work you’re not equipped for; flue blockage you’re guessing at
  • Opening sealed cooling-unit plumbing or torch work on the absorption loop
  • Furnace / water heater flame roll-out, CO alarm events, or repeated flame failure after basic supply checks — Prefer Text

Safety first (leak / smell / sooting)

Non-negotiable owner rules:

  • Smell gas → shut tank valve, ventilate high and low as practical, extinguish pilots/flames, no switch-flicking in the smell zone, Prefer Text or emergency services.
  • Never bypass LP safety devices to “get cold food through the weekend.”
  • Sooting / yellow flame / scorched cavity → shut down, Prefer Text. Incomplete combustion and heat damage are fire and CO territory.
  • Soap-bubble checks on fittings you understand can be part of careful leak finding — flame sniffing is not. If you’re unsure what you’re looking at, stop.
  • CO / LP alarms that chirp or alarm: treat as real until proven otherwise. Ventilate and get help.

Absorption vs residential compressor — know which you have

If your “fridge” is a residential unit on an inverter, LP lighting checklists waste time. If it’s absorption, compressor-fridge YouTube steps waste time. Read the model label on the fridge skin or inside the door.

Electric path checks (absorption dual-mode)

  • Mode set to Electric or Auto with shore present.
  • Coach outlet / fridge breaker live; EMS not rejecting shore (inverter / shore faults, no power).
  • Heating element path: no heat on electric with 12V board alive often means element or relay/board — confirm with proper testing, don’t swap boards on a guess.
  • Auto mode that “won’t choose” electric may be a sensing / priority setting — check OEM sequence before parts.

LP path checks (no safety bypasses)

  • Tank open, enough fuel, regulator breathing. Empty Auto-changeover bottles and tripped changeover valves fool people weekly.
  • Other LP appliances: if the stove won’t light either, fix supply before condemning the fridge. If the stove is fine and only the fridge fails, lean appliance-side (igniter, orifice, valve, board) — still no bypasses.
  • Spark electrode gap/cleanliness per OEM; cracked ceramic electrodes fail to light.
  • Flame sense / thermocouple / ESO must prove flame. Jumping them is how coaches burn.
  • After travel: spiders and debris in LP flues/burner tubes are classic — accessible cleaning only within OEM guidance; don’t shove wire into unknown passages blindly.

Level, ventilation, and heat-rejection

  • Absorption needs level. Use a real level on the freezer floor or per OEM — bubble levels on the counter can lie.
  • Rear roof vent and side vent path must be clear. Blocked vents = heat stays in the coil / boiler area = poor or no cooling and heat damage risk.
  • Summer: parking with the fridge side in full sun plus blocked vents is a common “sudden warm fridge” story.
  • Baffles and door seals matter. A failed cooling unit often presents as warm box with heat at the boiler / ammonia smell — Prefer Text; don’t try to “recharge.”

Residential compressor fridge path (short)

  • Confirm dedicated power: inverter sizing, shore pass-through, and that the fridge circuit isn’t dropping on low battery cutout.
  • Clear condenser airflow; dust blankets kill compressor fridges quietly.
  • Read the OEM error code — capture it before power-cycling clears the clue.
  • Door seal and temperature setpoint basics before “bad compressor” claims.
  • Ties to electrical pages when the inverter is the weak link: 12V no-charge, inverter / shore faults.

Related LP appliances (furnace / water heater)

If multiple LP appliances fail together, think tank, regulator, changeover, and main LP delivery before three separate appliance replacements.

Cooling unit failure signs (absorption)

  • Box warm; boiler area unusually hot; possible ammonia / chemical odor.
  • Yellow residue or oily film near cooling-unit seams (not definitive alone — context matters).
  • Unit ran off-level for extended time — classic cooling-unit stress story.
  • Cooling units are replace (or fridge replace) events — not DIY recharge. Prefer Text for confirm + options.

12V control board and fuse map

  • Locate the fridge control fuse on the coach panel and any inline fuses at the unit. Dark display + dead sparker often ends at a fuse or ground.
  • Aftermarket solar / inverter noise rarely “fixes” a fridge — chase power quality only after basics.
  • Board replacement without proving igniter, element, and LP valve is a common parts-roulette failure — meter first when safe.

Seasonal and altitude notes

  • High altitude: some LP appliances need orifice / OEM guidance; don’t drill orifices as a field hack.
  • First cool nights of the season after summer storage: spiders in burners/flues — inspect accessibly, don’t leave sooting unattended.
  • Storage: fridges left sealed wet grow mold; doors ajar with power off is owner maintenance, not a service call.
