AC compressor short cycling

An AC compressor that starts, runs briefly, then shuts off repeatedly (short cycling) is hard on the compressor and usually points to low refrigerant, a failing capacitor, or the unit tripping its own high-pressure safety switch. This isn't something to keep running hoping it clears up — repeated short cycling accelerates compressor failure. How many seconds/minutes does it run before shutting off each time?
