Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries
Built-in BMS with low-temp charge cutoff, a real amp-hour rating (not a marketing number), and a form factor that fits your existing battery bay without custom fab.
Solar charge controllers
MPPT over PWM for anything beyond a trickle panel. Size it to your array's actual watts, not your battery bank — undersizing throttles harvest on short winter days.
Solar panels
Rigid panels outlast flexible ones on a roof that takes branches and hail; flexible only makes sense on curved or weight-sensitive mounts. Check the real STC wattage, not the "up to."
Inverters & inverter/chargers
Pure sine wave only if you're running anything with a motor or a sensitive charger. Combined inverter/chargers save wiring complexity over separate units.
Roof coatings
Match the coating chemistry to your existing roof membrane (EPDM, TPO, fiberglass) — the wrong pairing peels within a season. Clean and fully cure before a second coat.
LP & CO detectors
Replace on the manufacturer's stated service life, not when it starts chirping — sensors degrade silently before they fail loud. Combo LP/CO units simplify wiring on a retrofit.
Macerator pumps
Look at amp draw against your house battery budget and real gallons-per-minute under load, not the box number. Serviceable blade housings save a full replacement later.
Composting toilets
Bin capacity vs. how many people/days between empties is the real spec that matters — not the brand. Confirm your bathroom's ventilation can support one before buying.
12V fridges
Compressor-based (not absorption) for reliable off-grid cooling and functioning at an angle. Check actual continuous amp draw against your battery bank, not peak startup draw.
