Starlink / Peplink dropouts on the road

Most serious travelers run cellular and Starlink together: cell for low-latency near towers, Starlink where towers disappear. Dropouts while rolling often look like “the ISP failed” when the real fork is obstruction, 12V brownout, WAN priority flap, or a cable that worked parked and failed after three travel days. Work the pattern first — parked open-sky vs trees vs highway speed — then touch hardware. Prefer Text when DIY ends.

Symptoms

  • Starlink app: obstruction, offline, searching, or reboot loops
  • Peplink: WAN down, frequent failover flap, high latency on one WAN, Health Check failing
  • Works parked clear-sky; fails under trees / next to buildings / at highway speed
  • Wi-Fi OK locally but no internet (or internet OK but VPN / captive-portal weirdness)
  • Boot loops after inverter surge, microwave, or AC kick-on (looks like ISP failure)
  • Cable / connector strain at roof boot or router WAN ports after travel days
  • Cellular bars look fine but throughput is unusable; SIM data exhausted
  • Dropouts that line up with low house-bank voltage or converter/charger events

Quick checks (owner-safe)

  1. Starlink app: obstruction map, reboot dish/router once, note firmware / offline reason. Screenshot the obstruction view.
  2. Power: confirm dedicated fused DC / ignition sense / DC-DC — not a shared flaky circuit that sags when the inverter loads up.
  3. Peplink: which WAN is primary? Cellular bars vs real throughput; SIM data left? Note Health Check status for each WAN.
  4. Cables: gentle wiggle-test at roof boot and router WAN ports after travel days. Do not yank proprietary Starlink cable or cut/splice it.
  5. Isolate: disable experimental features one at a time (VPN, aggressive QoS) before resetting everything twice.
  6. Pattern log: compare parked open-sky vs under trees vs highway speed vs busy campground — write down when it fails.
  7. Cross-check 12V: if dropouts line up with heavy loads, measure house voltage at the bank (see battery / inverter troubleshoot siblings).

When to stop DIY

  • Roof mount hardware loose, spinning, or seal failure risk
  • PoE injector heat damage or melted DC connectors
  • Any roof penetration you cannot reseal correctly
  • Cutting / lengthening proprietary Starlink cable without OEM guidance
  • “Community” firmware flashes or carrier “unlock” experiments outside support paths
  • Water intrusion at the dish cable boot

What UMRT diagnoses

  • Clear-sky mount placement and cable routing (Starlink install capability — not a Starlink Certified partner title)
  • Peplink WAN priority, Health Check, and SpeedFusion bonding and/or failover as configured (Peplink Certified Associate)
  • 12V supply stability under alternator / inverter load (DVOM where needed; thermal on hot injectors / connectors when indicated)
  • Antenna / cellular modem path vs dish path isolation
  • Honest expectation-setting: trees, canyons, and campground cell congestion are physics — not always a remount

Dropout pattern — parked vs rolling vs campground

  • Works parked clear-sky, fails under trees — obstruction / mount placement. Clear-sky position is required for Starlink; we assess that first on installs.
  • Works parked, flaps on the highway — mount vibration, cable strain, or cellular tower handoff; Peplink WAN priority and Health Check matter here.
  • Wi-Fi OK locally, no internet — WAN down on one path; check Starlink offline reason and Peplink WAN status before the double-reset ritual.
  • Boot loops after heavy 12V load — supply sag looking like an ISP failure. Fix power before chasing RF.
  • Campground evening slowdowns — cell congestion is real; bonding helps only if you actually configured bonding (not just failover).

Starlink path

Obstruction and mount

Obstruction maps do not lie. A dish tucked under an awning rail or beside an AC shroud will search forever in tree cover. Weatherproof exterior mount, sealed penetrations, and clean cable routing are the install standard — clear-sky assessed first.

Power and boot loops

PoE injectors and dish supplies that share a weak circuit will brown out when the microwave or AC kicks on. Confirm fused DC, proper gauge, and that the injector is not heat-damaged. Melted connectors are a stop-DIY moment — Prefer Text.

App / offline reasons

Capture the exact offline / searching reason and firmware before swapping hardware. Official support and app stores only — no sideload “fixes.”

Peplink / cellular path

WAN priority and Health Check

Bars are not throughput. A WAN that looks “up” but fails Health Check will flap and feel like random dropouts. Know which WAN is primary and what the failover order is before you swap SIMs at random.

Bonding and/or failover (SpeedFusion)

Peplink SpeedFusion is bonding and/or failover as configured. Bonding is not the same as simple failover. Hot Failover ≠ Bonding ≠ Smoothing ≠ local outbound-only — each is a different mode, as configured. As a Peplink Certified Associate we design for the mode the site needs, and we say which one you actually have. Do not assume “Peplink = bonded Starlink” unless that is what was configured.

Cellular realism

SIM data caps, tower handoffs at highway speed, and campground congestion will beat a perfect router config. We diagnose the stack; we do not invent RF or carrier miracles.

Power and 12V brownouts that look like ISP failures

If dropouts line up with inverter surge, alternator load, or a low house bank, fix power before chasing RF. Meter the bank under the same load that “kills internet.”
